A New Travel Requirement: Starting in mid-2025, a new travel authorization called ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) will be required for citizens of visa-exempt countries (including the U.S.) to visit most European countries for short stays. This change will affect close to 1.4 billion people worldwide.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is similar to the U.S. ESTA program. It’s a pre-travel authorization that allows you to enter Europe for short-term visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Once you have a valid ETIAS, you can enter the Schengen area (which includes 26 European countries) as often as you like within this time frame. How to Apply for ETIAS**

The ETIAS application process will be entirely online through the official ETIAS website (europa.eu). You’ll need a valid passport that doesn’t expire within 3 months of your intended departure from Europe. The application fee is expected to be €7 (around $8) per person.

Processing Times

Most ETIAS applications will be processed within minutes. However, in some cases, additional information or documentation may be requested, which could extend the processing time to up to 14 days. In rare cases, an interview might be required, which could further delay the process.

Important Things to Know

Validity:Your ETIAS will be valid for 3 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
Entry Requirement: Having a valid ETIAS does not guarantee automatic entry into Europe. Border guards will still check your documents and eligibility upon arrival.
Stay Limit: Remember the 90-day stay limit within a 180-day period in the Schengen area.
Passport Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from Europe.

Travel Checklist

Apply in Advance: It’s advisable to apply for ETIAS well before your planned trip to avoid any potential delays.
Passport Details: Ensure that the passport details you use for your ETIAS application match those on your passport exactly.
Validity: Check the validity of your ETIAS and passport before your trip.
Stay Limit: Be mindful of the 90-day stay limit within a 180-day period.
Passport Validity: Verify that your passport is valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure from Europe.

Stay Informed

As the ETIAS launch date approaches, it’s essential to stay updated on the latest information and guidelines. The official ETIAS website will be the primary source of information.
